Private Walter A Shandis, Pennsylvania, Service Number 33619181, served in Company A of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regt, 101st Airborne Division (made famous by the "Band of Brothers" book and TV mini-series). He was shot in the ankle during combat operations in September, 1944, during "Operation Market Garden", for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Private Shandis was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident, non-battle but while in the line of duty and was seriously injured in the chest. He passed away on October 6, 1944.
