Joe served as a Staff Sergeant & Right Waist Gunner on B-17G "Lily Marlene" #43-37976, 423rd Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Harris County, Texas prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 26, 1942 in Houston, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Bookkeeper and/or cashier and also as Single, without dependents.

Joe was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17, after being battle damaged, was forced to ditch in the North Sea during the war. There are some military reports that hint at his B-17 being involved in a collision with B-17 #42-102683 which, if so, might have caused them to crash. B-17 #42-102683, however, recorded no loss of airmen from their plane.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Service # 18186747

Joe also has a "Cenotaph" in the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery, Fayetteville, Texas.
