"Death's Doing. -"The home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shannon has been made very sad indeed, by the death of their two children, which occurred within five days, from that much dreaded disease, diphtheria. James Francis, the eldest son, who was aged six years, eleven months, and one day, had been confined in the house during the week prior to his death, apparently having a severe cold. On Sunday evening symptoms of a more dangerous character were noticed and the physician, Dr. Andrews, of Philipsburg, was summoned, who pronounced the disease membraneous croup, but later, diphtheria. There was nothing left undone by his devoted and tender parents that could have been done for his recovery. On Monday 28th of November the death angel visited the home for the first time and calmly bore little Jimmy away on its snowy pinions to his bright home above. His remains were interred in the Osceola cemetery, on Wednesday morning, the procession leaving the house at 9:30. Services were held in the Catholic church. The Morris Hill school, of which he was a regular attendant and a universal favorite, was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, 29th and 30th, and the school, in order to pay its last respects to the deceased, marched to the house in a body shortly before the procession left. Four of his schoolmates, Johnny Beals, Victor Fleck, Howard Flegal and Stephen Winter acted as pall bearers. The three children that survived also became a prey to the disease and averse to all that could be done by willing hands and tender hearts, the death angel reappeared in the home on Friday evening of the same week and the much bereaved parents were called upon to give up their second child, Charles Michael, aged four years.
