He was the first casualty from the city of Athol, MA in WWII. He died before the war began for the US but was still considered a casualty of WWII. Born September 14, 1919 in Athol, Worcester County, Massachusetts to Arthur H. and Sadie (Gray) Britt. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Guard, Company F, 181st Infantry for 3 years before he enlisted in the Navy on November 20, 1939. He was on the USS Reuben James when it was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean on October 30, 1941. His rank in the Navy was Coxswain at the time of his death. Posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Memorial services were held in Athol Congregational Church on November 9, 1941.
