Born on March 27, 1924, Ralph Oveson grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as one of ten children to Albert and Alma Oveson. As a child, Oveson attended Mark Twain Elementary School in Sioux Falls. Soon after high school, Oveson joined the Army infantry and immediately entered basic training in Texas. In 1944 Oveson was sent overseas to England to begin his active duty.

Oveson was a Staff Sergeant in the 116th Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, during World War II. First reported missing, Staff Sergeant Ralph Oveson was actually killed in action on that date, October 18, 1944, and he was subsequently confirmed dead.

During the war, Oveson was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. He now rests at Plot A, Row 8, Grave 12, at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Europe. Ralph L. Oveson was a great solider who dedicated his life along with his fallen comrades to protect our country. We owe our lives to these brave men who laid down their lives to promote democracy.
