Smith was a gunner on A-20B Havoc #41-3409, assigned to the 12th Air Force, 47th Bombardment Group, 84th Bombardment Squadron. They were on a mission to bomb an airdrome at Sciacca Sicily. Over the target they were hit by anti-aircraft fire, the plane burst into flames and crashed two miles south of Sciacca in a heavily wooded area.

Because his body was not recovered, Smith is memorialized on the Wall of the Missing. He received the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
