Jack served as a Chief Motor Machinist's Mate, U.S.S. YMS-103, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in North Dakota prior to the war. He enlisted in the Navy on April 15, 1942.

YMS-103, a Minesweeper, was patrolling off the coast of Okinawa. An enemy mine exploded under the U.S.S. PMG-18 lifting her stern completely out of the war. YMS-103 was sent to assist survivors of PMG-18.

During this assist an explosion blew the bow off the YMS-103. The YMS-103 was later intentionally beached in territory held by the United States ground forces and declared a total loss.

Jack was "Killed In Action" during this operation.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Jack was buried at sea.
