Obituary of
W. R. Hotchkiss

After nine days of illness death came to W. R. Hotchkiss at 10:15 Monday evening, June 30, at his home in Spirit Lake. He suffered his first attack Monday evening at his son's home east of Spirit Lake June 16. This was followed by two lighter ones Wednesday and Friday evening at his home. On Saturday evening, June 21, he had a severe one from which he never recovered. Because of their closeness to one another, Mrs. Hotchkiss never left his side and his daughter, Hazel Mabie from Nebraska and his son, Willis, from east of Spirit Lake were able to be with him also. Verna Frees, living in Seattle, Wash., and Shirley, working in California, were unable to be with him at the time of his death.

Mr. Hotchkiss has been a well known resident of Spirit Lake for 28 years, having joined the Methodist church in early life. He was a kind and loving husband and father and his cheerful face and pleasant words will be remembered by many.

Mr. Hotchkiss was born Aug. 27, 1874, at Vevay, Ind. He came to Iowa in 1900. He was united in marriage to Ada Gray, January, 1902, at Webster City, Iowa. To this union six children were born: Mrs. J. E. Mabie of Basset, Neb., Willis Hotchkiss of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Jay Frees of Seattle, Wash., Shirley of Spirit Lake. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. E. H. Ratzloff, pastor of the Christian and Missonary Alliance church in Spirit Lake in charge. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery.
