During World War II, Ernest (service # 13124170) was a Sergeant in the US Army Air Forces. He was a left gunner with the 3rd Photographic Squadron, 311th Reconnaissance Wing and was awarded the Purple Heart.
On a photographic mission to Tokyo on 09 Dec 1944, the F13-A airplane he was aboard ran out of fuel and ditched into the ocean about 100 miles northwest of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. Despite an extensive search, none of the 11 crew members were found.
