The newspaper clipping has errors. Joseph A. Long did not sail to France with the 23rd Infantry on July 23, 1918. The 23rd Infantry arrived in France during Sept. and Oct. of 1917.
He sailed for France on July 23, 1918 aboard Vestris as part of Camp Gordon Replacement Draft Company #65 and was assigned to the 23rd Infantry after arrival there.
The 23rd Infantry was not an organization of a 23rd Division. There was no 23rd Division. It was part of the 2nd Division.
Errors are common in clippings.
