August 26, 1946, at age 14, Robert was riding his bike with two other friends, when he was hit by an automobile being driven on the wrong side of the road at 7:15 p.m. He died instantly from a basal skull facture. The dirver, 25 year old, Raymond D. Schaefer was later arrested at his home in Fort Collins and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the hit and run death of Robert. He would later be arraigned and released on a $2,000.00 bond. Services for Robert were held at the Plymouth Congregational Church by Rev. William Strauch. Burial was at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collin, Colorado.
