While serving with Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, A.E.F., near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, 3 October 1918. Corporal Hansen voluntarily exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire, and with the assistance of another soldier, brought in from an exposed position a soldier severely wounded.

Corporal Hansen was killed after he had relieved himself of the wounded man.
