Karl W. Locke
PLACE OF BIRTH: Oberlin, Ohio HOME OF RECORD: Cleveland, Ohio AWARDS BY DATE OF ACTION: 1 of 3 Distinguished Service Cross AWARDED FOR ACTIONS DURING World War I Service: Marine Corps Division: 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces GENERAL ORDERS: War Department, General Orders No. 110 (1918)

CITATION: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Karl W. Locke (MCSN: 84506), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Fifty-First Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918.

Killed in action, Corporal Locke gave the supreme proof of that extraordinary heroism which will serve as an example to hitherto untried troops.
Karl served his country in the US Marine Corps, 5th Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, American Expeditionary Force. His rank was corporal at the time of his death. He was awarded the Navy Cross and Distinguished Service Cross.

According to a local newspaper in northeast Ohio, titled "ALL HONOR TO CORPORAL KARL W. LOCKE": "Corporal Locke was Lake County's first enlisted man and the first to meet his death as a strictly American soldier in France. Corp. Locke was 22 years of age last January. He was a handsome lad and was a universal favorite with all who knew him. Although his death comes hard to his family and friends, that he died an honorable death in the service of his country will partly compensate for a loss that is keenly felt in the community."

Karl Wilson Locke, who was killed June 3, 1918 in France, has been memorialized by having the American Legion Hall in Oberlin, Ohio bear his name.
