Lucy was the daughter of John Talcott Mack and Lydia Randall, both descended from old New England families, and was born in the Berkshire Hills where her father, "a very religious man", kept an inn. She married George W. Foote 14 October 1833, in Hinsdale. Shortly after their marriage, Lucy and George left Massachusetts for western New York State. George was the restless sort, never residing in one place for long. After stays in Cazenovia and Clocksville, both in Madison County, New York, they went on to Brecksville, Ohio; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Muskegon and Grand Rapids, in Michigan.

Lucy bore six children along the way, three of whom predeceased her. One can only imagine her courage and fortitude, her resilience and her sense of duty as she coped with pregnancy and childbirth, the care of her household and little ones in those days when travel was challenging and living arrangements primitive. After George's death in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1859, Lucy removed to South Bend, Indiana, the home of daughter Sarah, and there in South Bend, she stayed put. She had had enough of roaming to last her the rest of her life!

Lucy's children were:
Mary (1835 - 1859), wife of Gibbons S. Donihue
Sarah (1837 - 1867), wife of Albert Newell Baker
Harriet (1839 - 1904), wife of Norman Wheaton Faulk
John Henry Foote (1848 - 1919), husband of Lena Glass
Charlotte (1852 - 1927), wife of John M. Russell
William Henry dates unknown, died as an infant/child

"Death of Mrs. Lucy S. Foote - Mrs. Lucy S. Foote, mother of Mr. John Foote, the well known salesman at Morgan & Porter's, died at 11:30 o'clock Wednesday forenoon, aged 80 years. Her disease was lung fever and she was ill but a few days. The funeral took place from Mr. John H. Foote's residence, No. 704 N. Main Street on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services by Rev. W. H. Hickman. She was an old resident of the city having lived here since 1860. She was an almost life-long member of the Methodist Church and was greatly esteemed by all who knew her. She leaves two daughters, besides her son, to mourn her loss. These daughters are grown and live in New York State." South Bend Tribune, 3 May 1884
