Victor L. Kreimeyer, of Quincy, Wash., a former forest ranger in Wallowa County, died at age 89.
He was born October 19, 1920 to Louis and Louise (Sailer) Kreimeyer in Geneva, Iowa. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1938, and received a degree in forestry from Iowa State College in 1943.
He married Doreen Lewis in Texas in 1942. From the reserves he was inducted into the United States Army Air Corp in 1943. During World War II as a B17 pilot, he flew 51 missions from his base in Foggia, Italy, over enemy-controlled territory until February 1945. As a first lieutenant he returned to the states as a pilot instructor.
He finished his bachelor's degree on the GI bill, and then moved with his wife to Eastern Oregon where he began his career with the U.S. Forest Service as an assistant ranger in Enterprise. He was then promoted to district ranger at Wallowa, then district ranger on the Umatilla National Forest at Heppner.
While in Wallowa County he volunteered as director of the Wallowa County Chorus.
In 1961 he moved to Portland and served as regional environmental education officer, and was promoted to assistant regional information director. He was director of information for the Forest Service for the Pacific Northwest Region before retiring in December 1977.
Vic, as part of four couples started Hyland Vineyards out of McMinnville in 1971, as a pioneer of the vineyard industry in Oregon.
Vic had many hobbies during his life including photography, wood working, marquetry, gardening, music and, most recently, playing banjo.
He married Roxa Peters on June 23, 1985, at the farm in Quincy. They lived at the vineyard in McMinnville until moving to the farm in 1991 and to town in 2004.
His survivors include his wife, Roxa; his children, Vicki Kreimeyer of Boise, Idaho; and Greg and Barbara Kreimeyer of Coos Bay; four step-children, Rex Peters of Cottonwood, Ariz., Bill Peters of Port Townsend, Wash., Hal Peters of Redding, Calif., and Erin Peters and Fran Ragsdale of Chatfield, Minn.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Margaret Burmester of Hampton, Iowa, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his brother, John Kreimeyer and by a sister, Della Burkle.
Memorial services were held July 31 at the First Presbyterian Church in Quincy.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, Reiman - Simmons House, Heifer Project or the charity of choice.
