Services for William E. "Tucker" Hellyer Jr., 97, of Terrell, Texas, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the West Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ed Williamson of the First Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.
Mr. Hellyer died Thursday (Feb. 11, 1993) at Terrell Community Hospital.
He was born July 25, 1895, at Seven Rivers, where he went to school through the eighth grade when he became a cowboy on the Runyan Ranch near Weed.
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Hellyer was sent home to Decker County, Texas in 1919 after being wounded. He married Cora B. Pruit Feb. 15, 1920. A mechanic, he worked as a tool pusher in the Texas panhandle.
Around 1928, the family returned to Eddy County, where Mr. Hellyer helped his father drill water wells, and became known to many ranchers in the area as going non-stop during the drought to find water for them. In 1941, he converted his rig to do core drilling test wells for the potash mines, but returned to water well drilling when he put the first wells in Dell City, Texas
In 1951, he and partner Bob McClure purchased a large ranch at the foot of the Guadalupe Mountains beyond Washington Ranch, where they started a farming area.
The Hellyers returned to Carlsbad by 1957, where they built a home and retired, though "Tucker" worked at the mines after that. Saying that his job interfered with his hunting and fishing, he became the McMillan Dam gatekeeper in 1966.
Citing failing health, the couple once again came back to Carlsbad, though Mr. Hellyer moved to Wills Point, Texas, after his wife's death Oct. 4, 1986, to live with granddaughter Suzanne Schoolcraft.
Survivors include one daughter, Wanda Pixler of Graham, Texas; one sister, Mary Irene Engler of Palo Alto, Calif.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
