Grew up in a family that was very involved with horses. A couple of his brothers were jockeys, but he did some farming. Also worked at the White River power plant. Did a stint at farming at Smock Prairie. Eventually hay fever claimed him on the farm and he moved to The Dalles in 1843. He went to work for Union Pacific and remained with them until he retired.
