OBITUARY Died of paralysis March 28, 1891 at the residence of his daughter in the city of River Falls, Hosea B. Bates at the advanced aged of 87 years.
The deceased descended from a long and vigorous race. His father and mother were born in Thompson, Conn., where they were married in 1792 and immigrated immediately to Vermont where they raised a family of twelve children, eight boys and four girls, Hosea the subject of this notice, being the fourth child. The father lived to be 91 and his father living to be 90. These twelve children all lived to raise families ten of them living to be 80 and upwards, one died at 95.
Hosea Bates was born at Westford, Vermont, June 29th, 1803 and married Hannah Bowman in 1826. Mr. Bates was honored by his neighbors in the native state with numerous evidences of their confidence, holding many minor offices in his town serving as captain of a military company for many years and representing his assembly district in the State Legislature. He moved to River Falls with his family in 1854, where he has remained up to the time of his death. Mrs. Bates died here in December 1884.
Mr. and Mrs. Bates had five children, Hiram, David, Maria, Jennie and Sophia,all living except Jennie who died in Lock Haven, Penn., in 1871. These four sons and daughters and Mr Weed, husband of Maria were present at the funeral of their aged father which was held at the residence of his youngest daughter, Mrs. Dunbar, under the direction of the Masonic fraternity of which the deceased had for many years been a member.
Mr. Bates was known as an honorable upright man, a man who had no enemies and his friends were as numerous as his acquaintances. River Falls Journal 4-2-1891
