History - About the time Charles and Mercy's third child, Lucian, was born, the family moved to Knox County, Ohio. On 1 June 1812 the United States declared war against Great Britain (War of 1812). On August 26, 1812, Charles enlisted at Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio as a private in the Ohio Militia. Serving 41 days, which was an average enlistment, Charles received an honorable discharge. Making preparation to move to Illinois in 1825, Mercy became fatally ill and following the birth of their last child. Mercy died on October 18, 1825, at age 40.
