Mary Reynolds was born in 1786, the oldest of 12 children born to David Reynolds and Sarah "Sallie Galloway. Mary and her siblings were all born in Pennsylvania. The story was that David fell in love with Sallie Galloway, the girl next door, but she was too young for marriage. The couple faced opposition, one would assume, due to her young age. Their remedy was to elope and move from Ulster County, New York, to Lycoming Township, in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. The family resided here until about 1815, at which time David, Sallie and all the children, with the exception of Mary, removed to Big Flats, New York, in Tioga County, which would later become Chemung County.

Mary had married Moses Mahaffey, sometimes spelled Mehaffey, on April 3, 1811. They lived in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania for the remainder of their lives.

Mary and Moses were the parents of 8 children. Two died as small children, Rachel and John, showing up on the early census records and then gone by the next one. Those surviving were Sarah Jane, Lindsey, David R, Hannah, Elizabeth, and William J.
