Civil War Vet mustered in Sep 2, 1862 as a Private in Co A, 77th Illinois Infantry Regt and transferred to Signal Corps October, 1863.

Lester T. Stone served on the Galesburg School Board from 1878 to 1911, with his 34-year tenure being the longest in local history. Including his previous teaching experience he served the local school system for more than 50 years. In 1938 he was honored to have an elementary school on West North Street after him.

Longtime Galesburg School Superintendent W.L. Steele declared in 1911 that, "L.T. Stone had more to do with the making of the local school system than any other citizen." He was credited with having the ability to be the best friend of the students, teachers and the taxpayers.

Early in 1863 Stone enlisted in Co. A., 77th Illinois Volunteers and took part in many important Civil War campaigns, including the siege of Vicksburg. General U.S. Grant used Stone's clerical abilities and placed him in charge of his office detail. For nearly 50 years L.T. Stone was one of Galesburg's leading businessmen, operating a grocery store on Main Street, just east of the Public Square.

1890 received invalid pension.

NOTE: L. T. Stone and my Great-Grandfather sent each other numerous letters during the Civil War and we have several letters written by L. T.
