Jennie Luella was born in Kentucky and (according to information I've found) was the first born child of Mary Elizabeth (White) and Joseph James Burton.

She had at least three other full siblings: Rebecca, Lottie and Samuel. Her father also had the following children: Alde, Flora, Memphis, Nevel Andrew, John, Melford, Jesse Woodrow, Harrison and Anna.

She married Floyd Hampton on July 27, 1903 in Kentucky and together they had five children: Goldie, Anna Mae, W.A., Blanche and Woodrow. After Floyd's death she remarried to Johnathan Welty on February 2, 1919 and had two children with him, Aggie and Cody.

By the 1930 Census Luella indicated that she was divorced from Johnathan and living in Murray, Oklahoma. All her children lived with her, except the oldest (Goldie) who had passed. Goldie's daughter Pauline Smith was also living with Luella.

Luella finished the eighth grade and worked as a farm laborer and as a pecan sheller in a department store. Later Luella lived in Coalgate, Oklahoma and then in the Pittsburg, California area starting in 1947. She was a member of Pittsburg Baptist Church.

At the time of her death she was also survived by her sister, Lottie Johnson of Kentucky.
