Son of R. M. Smith and Eunice Taylor. Was a rancher in Brewster and Pecos counties. One of the last of the real old-time cowboys. In his younger years, prior to marriage, he competed in rodeos: roping, saddle bronc, and even rodeo clown (with his trick mule Theodore, and his German Shephard, Bonnie). He married Lilah McClintock, and moved to West Texas to ranch. Working for large ranches in the Davis and Glass Mountains, he later ranched for himself on 32 sections between Alpine and Ft. Stockton. His brand was the 1/2 Circle S. He raised sheep, hereford cattle, angora goats and quarter-horses. A gregarious, hard-working person, he had many friends in the ranching community. He died "with his boots on" while helping a rancher friend work stock.
