Karl Friedrich Hermann Lungkwitz was a noted Texas painter and photographer in the mid to late 1800s. Born in Halle-an-der-Saale, at the time part of the Prussian Province of Saxony, he trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden, Saxony. He immigrated to the United States in 1850 with his family, including his wife's brother, Friedrich Richard Petri, another well known Texas painter. Settling on a farm near Fredericksburg, Hermann painted many landscapes of the Texas Hill Country and the Spanish missions of San Antonio. Examples of his and Richard Petri's work can be found at the Texas Memorial Museum, University of Texas at Austin; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth; and the San Antonio Museum Association.
