Robert Ervin Hollis Jr. was born May 11,1924 in Maries Co. Missouri. He graduated from Dixon High School , Dixon, Pulaski Co. Missouri in 1943.
He worked on his father's farm for awhile after graduation. Like most young men at the time, he experimented with various types of work and employers. He worked at Ford motor Company in St. Louis just before his indution into the Army. in 1948.
After basic and advanced training he was sent to Japan as a medic assigned to the 24th Infantry Artillery Medical Detatchment. PFC Hollis was discharged February 1950 and returned home.He was recalled in August 1950 , sent to Texas for additional training and was deployed to the 5th Army's Medical Clearing unit assigned near Pusan, Korea. He was a medic and ambulance driver in a combat zone when circumstances were very serious for allied troops.
Like most soldiers of that time, Robert Hollis told very few of his experiences during his time in Korea. He did relate frequently violating regulations by overloading his ambulance with wounded soldiers to remove them from danger and take them to safety and medical help. He told of rescuing a small Korean boy, feeding him and after he was better took him to an orphanage.
Pfc. Hollis was discharged in 1951 at Fort Carson , Colorado . He returned to St. Louis, Missouri and found a job at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft where he had the job title of " tool expediter ". Prefering to work outdoors, he found work in home construction.
He married Mary Agnes Dickens Wagner in 1953 and they moved to Dixon, Missouri in 1956. He worked in Maintenance at Fort Leonard Wood until his retirement in 1973. For a period of time Robert Hollis served as an Elder at the Church of Christ in Dixon, Missouri, He enjoyed working on his farm near Dixon until his death in 2000
