Golden Wedding. [Archibald and Sophia Jones]

(Emporia Weekly Republican dated 23 April 1885 page 3 column X.)

After fifty years of happy married life and his many friends wishing to place in his possession some more tangible, though not more lasting, memento than happy memories of the occasion, last evening presented A. Jones, one of our oldest and most esteemed citizens, with a gold headed cane. A hay and apt presentation speech was made by H Metz, in which the old gentleman was wished all the happiness could bestow and a healthy and righteous old age deserve. Mrs. Jones thanked the gentlemen for their kind remembrances of him and gave assurance on his part that he would in the future, as in the past, continue to deserve their much appreciated respect. The party took supper at Frazer's parlors and the old friends, over the repast, brushing the cobwebs from their memories, went back into the years gone by, and spoke feelingly of the old settlers and companions that had passed away while they themselves yet remained to tarry a little longer. Following are the names of the gentlemen who made the present: H E Norton, D Thomas, Harlow Wiser, H Metz, Frank Jones, Arch Jones, P J Heilman, Wm Duguild, George Kremer, and Judge DeCamp.

From the Emporia Weekly Republican dated 18 August 1887 page 3 column 1:

Thursday all that was mortal of Mrs. A. Jones was laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. She was one of the mothers of Israel, being in her 71st year when called to her home above. Mrs. Jones was born in Brattleboro, Vt., and had been married fifty-two years on the 15th day of April last. She was the mother of eight children, with of whom, as well as her beloved and loving husband, are left to mourn her loss, this being the first death in the family, her husband, now in his 76th year, being still hale and hearty. Mrs. Jones was and has been a member of the Congregational church for over forty years. The funeral took place from the residence, 928 Merchant(s) street, and the exercises were conducted by Rev. Henry Mackay.
