Mary Alice Hartley, 74, of Lumberton, died Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Lumberton Rehabilitation Center. A memorial will be held Saturday, December 5, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church Loeb, Lumberton; Rev. Lawrence Phillips, her beloved pastor, will be officiating.

Mary was born February 11, 1930, in Grapeland, Texas, to James Leland and Annie Florence Chiles. She resided in Lumberton for 43 years and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Loeb, where she spent many hours quilting with her sisters in Christ and enjoyed taking trips with her friends. She was retired from Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital and loved taking care of the babies in the nursery.

Elwin Hartley, her husband of 44 years, preceded her in death in 1989. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her family. She is survived by her son, James Hartley and wife Beth of Port Arthur and daughter Gloria Smith and husband Tal of Kountze; grandsons Scott Hartley and wife April of Houston, Stephen Moore and wife Mary of Round Rock, Kris Hartley and wife Chrissie of Pflugerville, Michael Smith of Deer Park, and granddaughters Lindsey Moore of Kountze and Stephanie Smith of Deer Park; great grandchildren Jonah Hartley, Emma Hartley, and Mason Moore; brothers James Chiles of Crockett and Ronald Chiles of Lumberton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Loeb, Lumberton, Texas.

Mrs. Mary Alice Chiles Hartley, age 74 of Lumberton, formerly of Crockett, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2004 in the Lumberton Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Hartley was born February 11, 1930 in Grapeland and had lived in Lumberton for the past 43 years, previously living in Crockett. Mrs. Hartley was a retired nurse having worked in the St. Elizabeth Hospital and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Loeb.


Survivors include her son James Hartley and wife Beth, of Port Arthur; daughter Gloria Smith and husband Tal, of Kountze; grandchildren Scott Hartley and wife April, of Houston, Kris Hartley and wife Chrissie, of Pflugerville, stephen Moore and wife Mary, of Round Rock, Lindsey Moore, of Kountze, Stephanie Smith and Michael Smith, both of Deer Park; great-grandchildren Jonah Hartley, Emma Hartley and Mason Moore; brothers James Chiles, of Crockett and Ronald Chiles, of Lumberton.


Preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Elwin Hartley; parents James Leland and Annie Florence Chiles; and sisters Gloria Joyce McCullough and Laverne Chiles.


Memorial services for Mrs. Mary Alice Chiles Hartley will be held Saturday, December 4, at 10:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Loeb with the Rev. Lawrence Phillips officiating.
