Died at sea when the troop ship he was on, the HMS Otranto was struck by another ship the Kasmir in fog. "The storm broke the rudder and control of the Kasmir was lost by the Captain and it came direct to us hitting the "Otranto" between amidship and bow on port side or left hand side ripping a terrible hole in the side."

Ernest Gay was born 30 Jan 1890, in McDuffie County, Georgia, according to his WWI Draft Registration. He died 6 Oct 1918, in Machir Bay off the north coast of Islay, Scotland, when Otranto sank. [thanks to Tom Williams]
