ST. CHARLES, Minn.—Charles G. ‘Charlie’ Messerschmidt, 79, of rural St. Charles, died Monday evening June 12, 2000 at Hillcrest Community Care Center in Plainview, Minn.

Charlie was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Quincy Township of Olmstead County, Minn., to Edwin and Ellen (Donaldson) Messerschmidt. He attended St. Charles High School. Following school he worked for neighbors on the farm. Charlie served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and was stationed in the African and European theaters. On June 23, 1947, Charlie and Leonra ‘Polly” Weinrich were married in Olmstead County. They farmed on the family farm until retiring in 1981. Following retirement, Charlie helped neighbors until 1998.

He was a member of Dover United Methodist Church, St. Charles American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Little Valley Cemetery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Polly, son, Wade (Jean) Messerschmidt of St. Charles; three grandchildren; one brother, the Rev. Edwin Messerschmidt of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and sister Edwyna (Russell) Cravath of Chatfield, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susie and infant son, his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Dover United Methodist Church, with the Rev Sharon Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Little Valley Cemetery in rural Plainview. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Homes – St. Charles Chapel. They also may call one hour before services Thursday at the church.

Military graveside honors will be conducted by the St. Charles American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Hoff Funeral Homes –St. Charlee Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
