Like most of the family, Duke was a farmer, both in Tennessee and Kentucky.
The first five of Duke's children were born before the Civil War in Jefferson County TN, about 40 miles east of Knoxville. After the Civil War, the family lived in McMinn County, TN.
Duke's brother Jacob married Juda Ann Walker and followed her family to Crittenden County, KY before the Civil War. Duke and his family later moved to Crittenden County. Nancy died in 1870.
Duke's sister Mary Anna Bettis married Stanton Pierce and moved to Crittenden County in about 1860.
Another sister (Frances), married Jesse Moore on May 23, 1858. They had four children: Dollie, Darchus, Elihu and James. Their son James was born in Crittenden County KY, after the Moore family moved from Tennessee to Kentucky.
In May 1873, Duke married Evaline Tinley Feener. They were the parents of Joseph Utley Bettis.
