Obituary from the Tipton, Indiana, local newspaper:
The news of the death of Joseph L. Vandevender, long time resident of Tipton and a lifelong resident of the county, was a shock to the many friends, of this well known man. Mr. Vandevender had been in poor health for the past year and for the past six months had been confined to his home on West Madison street most of the time. He suffered with cardiac heart trouble and had spent some time in hospitals without getting any relief.
The deceased was born on what is now the John Nash farm three miles west of Tipton on Dec. 24, 1860. His parents were Isaac N. and Sarah A. (Foster) VanDevender, being pioneers of Jefferson township. His father was one of the early merchants of the county being engaged in business at Normanda for several years prior to being elected treasurer of the county and taking office in 1858. While in that office the father was for a time a partner of the Picken brothers of Tipton. The son, Joseph L. followed the father in mercantile pursuits being engaged in business in Tipton and at Hobbs for several years.
At the time his health broke, Mr. VanDevender was custodian of the Masonic building. Mr. Vandevender was united in marriage Nov. 8, 1891, to Miss Allie Rood, of this county, daughter of Alpheus and Eliza (Montgomery) Rood, and to this untion three children were born, who with the widow, survive. The children are Harry, of Indianapolis; Fred, of Farmland, and Miss Belle Jean, at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Sherman and Claude, of Goldsmith; Scofield, of Anderson; and a sister, Mrs. Dault Woods, of Normanda. Two grandchildren also survive.
