William S. Gates, 68 year old veteran harness maker of California, died Saturday night at St. Mary's hospital here.

Two weeks ago while fixing a machine, emery dust blew in his eye which became infected. He developed double pneumonia a week ago when he was brought to the hospital here.

Gates was born in Excelsior, Morgan county, May 17, 1887. When he was 17 he worked as an apprentice in the firm of Heck and Markwoth, harness makers. He followed the trade of harness making, specializing in horse collars, except for fifteen years as a farmer. He married Jenny Mae Dixon of Richmond in 1907.

Gates is survived by his wife and one son, Pfc. Alfred L. Gates, who has been prosecuting attorney of Moniteau county since 1929, now stationed at Camp Stoneman, California. He leaves also two brothers, Louis J. Gates, The Dallas, Oregon and Albert H. Gates, Garfield, Washington; three sisters, all of St. John, Wash., Mrs. Emma Speigel, Mrs. Mary Nelson and Mrs. Dora Harvey; and two grandsons, William Alfred Gates and Elmer A. Gates.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 pm Tuesday at his home in California, Rev. Paul Schappe, past of the Evangelical church there, officiating. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
