James Emory Dorland (1844-1915) served in the Civil War (Company C, 41 Ohio Infantry Volunteers, August 1862 until the close of the war in 1865).

After the war, James moved to Columbia City Indiana, where his mother Lucinda and older brother Richard had gone to live with her second husband.

James completed high school in Columbia City. This veteran of three years of Civil War (old beyond his years) then taught for two years, obtained a teaching certificate and was made an assistant principal as well as a teacher. James also was deputy clerk for Whitley County.

He married Arabelle America Ireland (1850-1895) and became a school book salesman, eventually settling his family in Louisville KY.

James and 'Belle were the parents of two daughters, Ethyl and Blanche.
