On a bleak Saturday afternoon, December 16, 1967, our Lord summoned Sister M. Dorothea into Eternity, after a long life fully dedicated to the service of the Divine Master and the religious community which she cherished so dearly.

Sister Dorothea, born in Poland on April 21, 1890, entered Nazareth in Cracow, Poland. After a novitiate training in Rome, Italy, she pronounced her first vows on October 10, 1914. Two years later, Sister was assigned to servicing the kitchenette at St. Mary's Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. In 1920, she assumed the responsibilities of sewing and engaging in domestic tasks at St. Mary's Home, Conshohocken, Pa. Irrevocably, she sealed her divine friendship with Christ through the Final Profession on the feast of the Assumption, 1922, at Torresdale, Pa.

S. Dorothea was stationed at Nazareth Hospital since its inception in 1940. Endowed with traits of orderliness and conscientiousness, she discharged with perfection the duty of caring for the wardrobe of the Sisters. She also possessed a keen insight into the needs of the Community. During the difficult pioneering stages of Nazareth Hospital, she contributed her services in soliciting funds and materials on behalf of its physical development. Work, however, was not the all-absorbing part of her life. Early, in her religious life, Sister realized that in the intimate exigencies of her active life, it was only through prayer that she could render the exterior apostolate more apt. She fostered an intense devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament, as the Sacrament of Love. Thus, she was wont to issue gentle reminders to Mother Superior to procure flowers to adorn the altar for the various feasts.

Her spirituality was further deepened and rooted in the universal charity which she communicated to her fellow Sisters through acts of kindness and self-renunciation. Within her unselfish and generous heart our beloved Sister encompassed also the needs of our infirm and aged Sisters and offered her services and words of encouragement to alleviate their burdens and aches. She would check if they took their medication, reminded them of their visit to the clinic, and visited them when they were bedridden. No human sorrow or need was too small to attract her attention and kind consideration.

Her virtue of justice found its exercise principally in the practice of holy poverty and obedience.—As she lived in Love and Service, so she died. Her last function was an act of love, namely – preparing and decorating gifts for benefactors for Christmas. It was here that a massive cerebral hemorrhage occurred. The Chaplain and doctor were summoned and preparations for transferral to the hospital were readied. Sister Dorothea however, breathed her last in the company of those with whom she prayed, loved, suffered, and rejoiced for the past 27 years.

News of her death brought forth favorable comments concerning Sister's material and spiritual contributions both to Religious and Lay. With saddened hearts but full of hope in the Resurrection, we bid Sister our last farewell as her body was translated to Torresdale, Monday morning. In the afternoon at 5:00 p.m. the Sisters chanted the Vespers of the Dead and prayed the rosary in common. The following morning at 10:00 a.m. a solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Francis Urbanowicz, chaplain, and four priests were present in the sanctuary. A number of Sisters from Nazareth Hospital also attended and took part in the funeral procession to the cemetery. As we entrust our beloved Sister to the mercy of Christ, we strongly believe that the final chapter in her book of life records her life of perfection as one that rested on supernatural charity in full dedication of self to God and to the apostolate oriented by obedience.

May she rest in everlasting peace!
