Richard was the youngest of four brothers and one sister. He was born to Eli Daniel and Rhoda Cock Spangler. The family lived in Carroll County VA, several years in Kentucky, then in the Pocahontas area of Tazewell County. He married Lucy Turner in 1900 and they had four daughters and one son. As a young man he worked as a sawyer for sawmills run by his father and later his brother Everett. He played the fiddle and would entertain the family in the evening hours.
