Dora Jean Barker was born 03 April 1922 in Morgantown, W.Va., a daughter of William Wellington "Bill" Barker and wife Margaret "Margie" Johnson.

She graduated from Morgantown High School in 1940. Mrs. Carroll earned a bachelor of science in home economics from West Virginia University, Morgantown, and studied at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

Jean married James Edward "Jim" Carroll of Ashland, Ky., in Morgantown on 21 April 1946. He was a son of Walter John "Stubby" Carroll and wife Anna Dale "Ann" Russell.

Jean and Jim Carroll owned and operated Carroll Office Equipment and Carroll Educational Systems in Ashland for many years. They had two sons.

She was a deacon at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, where she served as vice president of the Christian Woman's Fellowship.

Mrs. Carroll died on 09 Mar 1988 in Ashland after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, her mother, brother Charles Leslie Barker, and her father-in-law. She was survived by her father, her stepmother Alta Steele Barker, her mother-in-law, two sons and a grandson.

During her graveside service, the Rev. Robert L. Bradley spoke about her Christian service. She "was really a Christian friend. Christ was central to her life. She was a servant of God who did her faith. She worked, organized, telephoned, cared and encouraged. She thought positively and built bridges between people. She drew circles of relationship that took others in with her gifts of personal honesty and acceptance and reaching out. Time and again, she helped others more shy than she feel accepted and included. She had high expectations of other people and always looked for a positive response. She also had a lot of what her generation called spunk. Not only was she a Samaritan type person, but she also had some of the fire of Peter and the Old Testament Prophets. I loved that about her, especially when she would, with no holds barred 'speak her mind' to someone who thrived on being critical and destructive."
