Dee Franklin was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah, where his father was a Salt Lake County Deputy Sheriff. He grew up in Utah and Nevada. In Utah, they moved from Bingham Canyon shortly after his birth to Silver City, which is now a ghost town 6 miles south of Eureka. He also lived in American Fork and Eureka. In Nevada, they lived in Goldfield and Warm Springs which are both ghost towns now, and in Ely.

Dee was living in Eureka, Utah in 1920, where he was working as a miner in a silver mine. In 1927, he was living at Dividend, Utah which was a mining city 4.5 miles east of Eureka.

He married Afton Laurel Peterson in Santaquin, Utah on 5 Dec 1924. As of April 1930, he was living in Salt Lake City with his wife and three children, working as a hardware salesman. He died that same year, as a result of a gun shot wound.
