Dolores Margaret Jean Porter

Jean Porter 1918 - 2010 Jean Porter was born and raised in Sacramento, Ca, by her loving parents Willis Lincoln and Claire Luttrell Thatcher, grandparents Charles Edward and Margaret Elizabeth Cooney Luttrell and the Reverend Reese Harriman Thatcher.

She worked for the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II from 1941 through 1945, 10 hours a day, 6 and sometimes 7 days a week. In 1944 she was offered a promotion and transfer to Hanford, WA, where the US Army Corps of Engineers were engaged in a secret project (the atomic bomb). She refused the project because of pending plans to marry her fiance, Army officer, Ralph Creston Karnes. They married in 1946, settled in Bakersfield and raised their family.

Jean was later married to Lee Bryan Armstrong for 24 years and widowed in 1991. Later, Jean married a long time friend and neighbor, Frederick Chicago Porter. Their marriage was a wonderfully happy one with extensive travel. Fred died unexpectedly in 2000, immediately after they returned from the last of their many trips.

Jean was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Stockdale Country Club, Greater Bakersfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, ASPCA, 2 bridge clubs of long standing, and Delta Theta Tau International Sorority, which she was a past President and alumni. She was known for rescuing and finding homes for many abandoned animals.

Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Karnes of Bakersfield; her daughter and son-in-law Felicity and Joe Moore of Santa Barbara; grandchildren Spencer and Jordan Karnes, Tristan and Liliana Claire Moore; her brother and sister-in-law Ted and Lee Thatcher of Sacramento; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1701 17th St. at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the local ASPCA.
