Donald 'Butch' L. Renken
Donald 'Butch' L. Renken of Hungry Horse. He passed away Nov. 25 at Whitefish Extended Care Unit after a lengthy illness with cancer. He was born, Aug. 23, 1921, in Chester, S. D., to Jack and Gladys Renken. He graduated from Chester High School in 1939, and entered the Navy. He retired with a Chiefs rating in 1959. He moved to Kalispell where he served a short time on the police force. He then worked for the Bureau of Reclamation as a mechanical engineer at Hungry Horse Dam. He served as a consulting engineer on several dams throughout the U. S. until he retired in 1976. He married Shirley Weber-Kohlman in Kalispell on Aug. 17, 1973. They made their home in Hungry Horse and then in 1983 purchased a home by the Kenai River in Alaska. The Renkens returned to Hungry Horse in 1989 due to ill health. He was active in the Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna, Ala., where he taught Bible classes. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Columbia Falls. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Hungry Horse; three step-daughters, Karen Berggren, of West Glacier, Brenda Haider, of Hungry Horse and Peggy Witt, of Fairbanks, Ala.; four sons, Commander Del of Rhode Island, Don, of Bremerton, Wash., Duane, of Kalispell and Dan, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two daughters, Dawn Graham, of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Dixie Renken, of Escondido, Calif.; one brother, Dan, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister Virginia Pedigo, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; and 10 grandchildren and a host of friends. Services were at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Burial with military honors followed at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia Falls.
