Thomas Francis "Butch" Clark was born in Winston Co. Mississippi, to Mathew Hutchinson and Elizabeth Francis Clark. His family moved to Caldwell Co. in 1849. Tom joined the "Trail Drivers" at an early age and help hunt down wild cattle in Texas. He served in the CSA during the Civil War in the 36th Cavalry Regiment [also called 32nd Regiment], Co. K.

He married Bettie Elizabeth Eustace (daughter of Joseph Neal and Francis Emily Hancock Eustace) on 15 Sep 1870. They settled on a 300-acre farm near Prairie Lea, Texas. He also worked for the Spaulding Carriage Company selling carriages and wagons. (ref: "Caldwell County Kin: The First 150 Years")
