The son of Samuel & Fianna (Shore) "Fanny" Niess [sic], in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes. He married Mary Cox and fathered the children you see linked below. His family is in the 1860 census as "Nase."

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 17, 1865, as a musician (fifer) with Co. G, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866. He is in the company register as "Niess."

Cause of his death is listed as "chronic myocarditis" with "general arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
