In the 10 October 1883 newspaper THE MOUNTAINEER, Morganton, NC, the following was reported:
"We understand that Lewis Wilson a young man 21 years old living about 6 miles from town was found dead near his home on last Tuesday. (sic) He had left that morning for the purpose of gathering chestnuts and it is supposed he fell from a large chestnut tree near where he was found."
