Sylvester worked as a laborer for the railroad and later as a freight handler for John Deere Plows.
In 1931, their daughter, Vernetta, died at the age of 19 following an appendectomy at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis. She had been married only a short time.
Sylvester and Clara eventually divorced.

Sylvester's second wife was Mrs. Margaret "Maud" (nee Stauffer) Russell. She was the mother of several children from her first marriage.
Children from second marriage: Step-children.
Sylvester died at St. Louis Chronic Hospital of a coronary occlusion and diabetes. At the time of his, he was 66 years, 5 months and 19 days old.
He was survived by his second wife, Maud.
Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 a.m. on the morning of 28 Dec 1957 at the Robert D. Kinealy Mortuary in St. Louis.
Sylvester's wife, Maud, passed away in 1971.
