Floyd was born near Spencer Switch west of Hull, Illinois and traveled by train with his family when they Homesteaded to eastern Colorado. Floyd was said to be a bright child, when he died of "summer complaint" (diarrhea). The following letter was written by Floyd's grandmother Nancy Ellen Smith Gudgel to her daughter Myrtle Gudgel Treaster in Hull, Illinois describing Floyd's death.

July 10th 1907
my dear children i will rite you afew lines to let you know how we are. well, myrtle, god seen fit to send the death angel to orlies and febys family but he has sent another birth to them. floid was buried on monday and the baby was born on tuesday night. it is a girl. she got along fine. it was only 45 minutes from the time she first took sick till it was all over with. it was born before the doctor could get down to the house. feby and orlie is all brok up over loosing their little boy. she is afraid mrs adkins will think she dident take good care of him but myrtle, she done all on earth she could four hime. he was a affle smart child he was put away affle nice. . .i will quit rite soon from mama to my dear children
