Margaret Anne Schalasky, 83, of rural Oblong the bend area), died at 12:20 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2008, at her residence.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong and from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at St. Valentine Catholic Church in rural Jasper County. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with Father Al Kemme officiating. Burial will be in St. Valentine Cemetery.

Mrs. Schalasky was born on May 23, 1925, in the Bend area of Jasper County, the daughter of Joseph Ochs and Margaret (Rennier) Ochs. She married George A. Schalasky on July 13, 1946. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1996.

She was a homemaker and a mother to many people throughout her life. She was also an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking, canning and reading. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption in Ste. Marie and also attended St. Valentinein rural Oblong. She was a member of Ste. Marie American Legion Post #932 Auxiliary and 508th Paratrooper Association Auxiliary. She lived here until moving to Harrisburg in 1946. In 1961, she moved back to the Bend area.

Mrs. Schalasky is survived by sons, Francis Schalasky and his wife, Ann, of Oblong, Walter Schalasky and his wife, Linda, of Stoy, George Schalasky and his wife, Karan, of Olney, Thomas Schalasky and his wife, Kimberly, of Mt. Carmel, David Schalasky and his wife, Jean, of Hermston, Ore., Daniel Schalasky and his wife, Darnell, of Oblong, Joseph Schalasky and his wife, LouAnna, of Evansville,
Ind., and John Schalasky and his wife, Bonnie, of Decatur; daughters, Eva Hahn and her husband, Paul, of Olney, Mary Anne Davis and her husband, Jerry, of Charleston, Rose Gangloff and her husband, Robert "Bob," of Oblong, and Ruth Anne Costa and her husband, Louis, of Pembroke Pines,
Fla.; 38 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George A. Schalasky; one daughter, Margaret Schalasky; two brothers, Daniel and Valentine Ochs; one infant brother; six sisters, Irene Freeman, Beatrice Seller, Winifred Delinck, Florentine Procknow, Leona Roth, and Mary Kraus; and one great-granddaughter, Abbygail Harp.

Memorials may be made to St. Valentine Cemetery Fund or Effingham Catholic charities with envelopes at the funeral home and church.
