PIONEER LADY PASSES AWAY
Mrs. Petro Had Been Resident Of Gaylord For Many Years
The hearts of the people of the Gaylord community were saddened Monday, when news was received that another of their pioneer ladies, Mrs. David Petro, after an illness of several months, had passed away at her home in that city. Mrs. Petro had been a resident of the Gaylord community for nearly sixty-three years and was familiar with local history from the boom days. She knew from experience all about the years of plenty, of drouth and hard times, but was ever uncomplaining, having in a marked degree the true spirit of the pioneer. She was a loving wife and mother, and we join with her many dear old friends in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones.
Sarah Crawford, daughter of Robert and Ellen Crawford, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, on April 15, 1964, and passed away at her home in Gaylord, Kansas, on June 9, 1941, being of age 77 years, one month, and 24 days. Her father passed away when she was five years old, and in 1874 she came to America with her mother, brother and two sisters, settling in Wisconsin. In 1879 the family moved to Smith county, settling near Gaylord, which community has ever since been her home.
On September 21, 1883, she was united in marriage to Geo. B. Paul of Gaylord, and to this union was born her only child, Lizzie Harriet Hagadorn. In September, 1885, her husband passed away. Six years later she was united in marriage to David Petro of Gaylord. Her mother, a brother, Robert Crawford, a sister, Mary Adams, and two half-brothers, James and Eugene McClain, have preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, David Petro, her daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Hagadorn, one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Merritt of Pasco, Wash., and two half-sisters, Mrs. Elsie Cooley of Emporia and Mrs. Emily Anderson of Harlan. There are also four grandchildren, Mrs. William Larson of Topeka, Mrs. Eva Conrad, Richard and Louise, all of Gaylord, besides two great grandchildren, Rex and Lawrence Gene Conrad, besides many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held, Wednesday, at the Community church in Gaylord, conducted by Rev. Herbert Lilly, and the body was laid to rest in Gaylord cemetery.
