John McClain (McClean), son of James and his 1st wife Catherine (Hamilton) McClain,was honorably discharged at Camp Nelson, Dec. 31, 1863. He enlisted Aug. 19, 1861 at Port Clinton. He mustered out on July 12, 1865 as John McClain. His enlisted for his 2nd tour of service Jan. 28, 1865 at Hollidaysburg for 1 yr. as a substitute. Served in Co. A, 48th Regiment of PA Inf., volunteer Boatman.Served under Col. Pleasant and under Capt. Hooker. Wounded in action at Petersburg,VA. Wounded at Lexington, KY (Morgan's Ohio raid). At Camp Biddle, Carlisle, PA Jan 31, 1865. Hospitalized at Hamwood, Washington D.C.

John was married to Jane Hall Sept. 17, 1867 at Byron, WI. They are the parents of Robert E., Hamilton, Emma, Ethel, Henry, John, Katie, Agnes, Frank, and Arthur.
