Berton W. Smith, 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Innovis Hospital, Fargo.

Berton W. Smith was born to Waldo and Rose (Redman) Smith on Nov. 1, 1926 in Lake Park. He grew up and attended country schools in Lake Park and Detroit Lakes. Following his education, he worked on the family farm near Callaway. On June 12, 1949 he married Betty Johnson at Richwood Lutheran Church.

Over the years, Berton farmed and then worked for Peters Meat Products, Seaberg Oil Co., and Ferrellgas, all of Detroit Lakes. He and Betty moved into Detroit Lakes in 1979, and Berton retired in 1992. Berton was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa.

He was a very active member of Richwood Lutheran Church and held many offices, most often that of treasurer. He was a member of Sons of Norway and AARP, and served as treasurer for those organizations also. He enjoyed sports, dancing, playing cards, gardening, mowing lawn, going on trips, fixing things, and helping others. He also enjoyed helping Betty with her baking, and was known for making the best mashed potatoes.

Surviving Burton are his wife, Betty; two daughters, Jean (David) Erickson of Detroit Lakes and Janet (Randy) Keim of Franklin, Wis.; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Suedel of Sabin, Minn.; one brother, Ronald (Virginia) Smith of Hudson, Wis.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his daughter, Joyce Smith; parents, Waldo and Rose Smith; three brothers, Ralph Smith, Willard Bloom and Carroll Bloom; as well as four sisters, Gloria Suedel, Edith Barsgard, Florence Bramer and Amy Stokke.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, at Richwood Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Gregory S. Anderson officiating.

Casketbearers were Greg Smith, John Barsgard, Terry Suedel, David Suedel, Daniel Smith and Ellis Bramer. Honorary pallbearers were Jerome Wamre, Claris Greenland, Leonard Heltemes, Keith Geisen, Everett Mulcahy, David Foltz, Duyane Foltz and Gerald "Red" Sloan.

Burial was in Richwood Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes. West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, was entrusted with arrangements.
