Enos remained in Virginia until his father's move to Ohio in 1832 because of his opposition to slavery.
Irma Loy Miller wrote of Great Grandma Harriet, "Her father owned slaves and when she was a baby she had a negro wet-nurse. I can't imagine that it bothered her at all, but it did cause one of her descendants a little trouble. His fiance's guardian objected to him because she claimed that the Mitchell's had negro blood. Hope none of you will lose sleep over that.
Enos' occupation before 1850 was a blacksmith, but in the 1850 census of Meigs Co., Ohio, he was a 34 year old miner, his wife "Harrit" was 30 years old. Enos removed from Meigs County, Ohio in 1851 to Knox Co., Ilinois.
Their son Enos said he was born in Decatur Co., IA in 1853.
Enos Mitchell owned the S. E. 1/4 of section 29 in Copley township, Knox Co., IL.

The 1860 U.S. Census for Copley township, Knox Co., Illinois shows Harriet Mitchell born in Virginia a farmer beings aged 40 years, with Children George, Charles and Harriet all born in Ohio, Major, Enos, Obidiah and Lewis all born in Indiana. In the 1870 census Enos' birth place is listed as Iowa, Obidiah and Lewis as Illinois.
Harriet objected when Charles planned to marry Jane. His brother, George, had married when her sister Rosetta and Harriet remarked that "two sows out of the same litter was too many in one family." That didn't stop them from getting married, however.
When Harriet died, the three younger brothers; Enos, Asbury and Obadiah, which she had called Teeny, Tazzy and Toby, came to live with Charles and Jane in their 16 foot square cabin [probably 16X16] in Illinois. They had a son, Walter, and it must have been a crowded situation. In those days it wasn't really unusual, I guess.
In a petition filed in Know Co, IL, 21 Aug. 1871 for guardianship of Enos, Obidiah W. and Lewis Asbury Mitchell minors entitled to real estate value of $600 as the heirs of their father Enos Mitchell, deceased, but no personal property, request their brother Charles W. Mitchell as guardian. Om 28 De. 1874 a guardianship was filed by Charles W. Mitchell for Obadiah N. and Lewis A. Mitchell, minor orphans of Enos and Harriet Mitchell in Clark Co., Iowa.
