Ethel (Martin) Hole was born on 6 September 1878 at Atchison, Kansas. She was the daughter of John Alexander Martin and Ida Challiss. John Alexander Martin was A Colonel in the Union army, the editor of Freedom's Champion (the successor to the Squatter Sovereign) at Atchison and was governor of the state of Kansas. Ethel had three sisters, Ruth, Grace, Faith and three brothers, Paul Alexander, Evan C. (renamed John Alexander after the death of his father) and Harres.

Ethel graduated from the Emporia State Teachers' College at Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas and was a teacher from 1902 to 1903 at Good Intent District School, Atchison, Kansas.

Ethel Martin married Charles B. Hole, son of Henry Hole, on 4 September 1903 at 315 North Terrace (was N. 1st), Atchison, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Hole resided from 1910 to 1932 at R.F.D. 1, Monrovia, Atchison County, Kansas. She was a long standing member of the Monrovia Methodist church where she taught the adult bible class until the time of her death. Mrs. Hole died from heart attack on 15 September 1940 at Effingham, Atchison County, Kansas, at age 62 years and 9 days. She was buried at Monrovia Cemetery on 17 September 1940 at Monrovia, Atchison County, Kansas. She was survived by a sister, Mrs. Paul (Ruth Martin) Tonsing, Atchison.
